In Search of Meaning

In February this year the third group of students finished minor ‘In Search for Meaning’. Students from abroad and students from the HAN joined this course in their search for meaningful, spiritual and motivational aspects of life and society. They worked hard to apply their insights and skills into both their professional ánd personal lives. I would describe the search for meaning like a journey. It might feel like hiking in the fog – but at some point we all find our trails, or notice the warmth and light of the sun, like a spot on the horizon showing how to continue our personal and professional roads.

This is what one of the students, Leah, wrote about it:

“This minor has taught me so much about myself, about how society works and has given me many tools to apply meaning in any aspect in conversations with others, but also in the professional context. It was an intense experience, which has not always been easy, as I was in the search of meaning myself and did not have all the answers to questions like what purpose I have in my life, what I wish to contribute especially when it comes to the professional side. After finishing up my bachelor’s in psychology at Radboud University in Nijmegen, I was confronted with the question what was next to come for me, which career path I wanted to pursue. How should I know? So when a friend of mine told me about this minor I was in heaven and extremely excited. Now, after these six months, I’m more than thankful for having had this wonderful experience of meeting amazing people from different cultures, with different personalities which enriched our debates so much. I learned for life, which is not comparable to what I learned during school or my psychology studies. So, I can recommend this minor to everyone from my deepest heart! Be ready for a challenge and enjoy the journey! And don’t worry the teachers are always by your side in case you need anything! They have been amazing as well.”

Thanks for your reflections, Leah! Thanks for being with us in this minor, students. Enjoy your pathways!

During the minor I got to know myself better. The kind teachers, fun classes and nice classmates created a warm and open environment. We had many interesting discussions/conversations in class on ethical issues. This brought me many insights.

We were able to adapt the assignments to our own (work) situations. It was very special to be able to create a ritual together with someone. And also to write a paper about a meaningful topic that interests me on a work related level. This gave me many insights into both my professional and personal life.

The minor has made me more open minded and I look differently at life and people. The many tools and nice conversations really gave me many meaningful insights. I recommend the minor to everyone!
