Around the world in 50 kilometers

Traveling is a great passion of mine. To try new things, experience different cultures, and meet other people. Traveling costs money, you need time, and therefore not always possible. That is why I made a trip around the world, but closer to home. I stayed in the Netherlands, with surprising experiences and results.

Tibet
My trip around the world started in Tibet with their traditional tea: black tea, milk, butter, and salt. I know it sounds disgusting at first, but traveling is also about trying new things. Honestly, the scent wasn’t my favorite, but it tasted pretty good.

India
After my short visit to Tibet, I traveled to India. At the ashram nearby I participated in the Aarti (light ceremony). Every morning and evening, anyone regardless of their religion, is welcome to attend. The mantras that were sung were in Sanskrit. A woman from England happily helped us sing along. It was very special to experience the warmth and openness we were welcomed with. And to share that moment with people from all over Europe.

France
My trip ended with a balfolk ball. Balfolk is a dance form of a collection of Western European dances. We danced in couples and with the whole group to live music. We danced across the dancefloor, jumped, and laughed while the musicians played the accordion. Everyone danced with everyone else and you definitely didn’t have to be good at it. Because of the music, it didn’t feel like I was in the Netherlands.

When you are abroad it is easier to experience the culture because it is all around you. You have to put in a little more effort and step out of your comfort zone to experience that in your own country. In the Netherlands, it is a bit easier because of our multicultural society. I really hope this has inspired you to try something new. Even if it is by trying a new tea, with salt and butter.
