Sometimes you grow, sometimes you outgrow
Moving to a new city, or country even, is quite the move. Literally. Moving comes with tons of stress, things that need to be taken care of. But it’s an adventure, nonetheless.
It all worked out in the end
Eventually, you’re moving out. Some people rather sooner than later, and some don’t even want to think about leaving home. The scariest thing for me about leaving home was having to create my own. At times, I got anxious about the whole process of moving and on multiple occasions, it got too overwhelming. But living on my own also taught me wonderful things; independence and self-love. I moved out of my hometown because I outgrew it and fell in love with Nijmegen the second I walked in. I found an apartment, got a new job here, went back to school, and bought a puppy. I turned my life upside down, and it all worked out in the end. But it is not always like that.

Moving countries isn’t easy
Moving on its own has quite the impact already. Now imagine moving countries. If leaving home isn’t a voluntary decision, then there is no fun to it. Moving countries because of educational or social purposes can be a whole different experience. But even then, it might just not be that easy. Finding a place to live, learning a new language, and adjusting to a different culture can be quite hard. Even when you’re following an international course, you will most likely be put in a class with classmates that speak the native language. It might get incredibly lonely at times. If that is the case with you, leave a comment. Who knows? Soon you might not be so lonely anymore.
The lessons
Living by yourself also taught me a great deal about self-acceptance. Suddenly you are on your own. There isn’t much that can prepare you for it either. Trust me, being on your own while your parents are on a vacation does not come close to any of it. What the most important lesson of all of this has been, to me? I learned that I am my own safe space. Which means that no matter where I’ll go, I’ll always be home.
