Workshop – Trends in Learning & Development

Trends in Learning & Development: “Performance Support as the methodology to support workplace learning or to make the “70” in 70-20-10 work”
“It simply isn’t acceptable to throw learners over the classroom and/or eLearning wall into the workflow and then hope that what we did during the online or class event will magically transfer to successful job performance. It doesn’t. We know full-well that learning doesn’t stick unless you put in place provisions that support performance in the workflow.”
About the speaker:
Alfred Remmits has been the founder of several companies in the world of Learning & Performance Support, including one of the largest IT training companies in the Netherlands in the late 80’s and one of the leading Global Performance Support companies in early 2000. Alfred is a regular speaker at learning events and is recognized internationally for his views on 70-20-10, Performance Support, Adaptive Learning and the topic of “Big Data in Learning & Development”. Alfred spends about 50% of his time supporting Learning & Development organizations in the US and 50% in Europe. Alfred has served on many boards, including Microsoft’s Global Learning Advisory Board between 2004 and 2006 and currently the Board of the Performance Support Community in the US. Alfred has a master degree in Social Science from the University of Amsterdam and lives in the Netherlands.
About the workshop:
Together with Bob Mosher (the former Director Learning Strategy & Evangelism of Microsoft) and Conrad Gottfredson (PHD from BYU) Alfred Remmits has developed the innovative “5 Moments of Need” instructional design model that is focused on developing workplace learning. This model is focused on supporting our employees at their most profound moment of need for learning, the moment of Apply, when an employee behind his desk, needs immediate support to complete his task.
The “5 Moments of Need” model is a very practical approach to realize a better performance of your employees, by personalizing learning, based on the principles of 70-20-10.
The 5 Moments of Need are:
- When people are learning how to do something for the first time (New);
- When people are expanding the breadth and depth of what they have learned (More);
- When they need to act upon what they have learned, which includes planning what they will do, remembering what they may have forgotten, or adapting their performance to a unique situation (Apply);
- When problems arise, or things break or don’t work the way they were intended (Solve); and,
- When people need to learn a new way of doing something, which requires them to change skills that are deeply ingrained in their performance practices (Change).
In the both the US and the Netherlands many of the large Fortune 1000 organizations have started to adopt the “5 Moments of Need” model as the new Agile methodology to design and develop all their learning. Many large companies and organizations, including Bank of Amerika, Boeing, McDonalds, the US government agencies, Bayer, Philips Lighting, Akzo Nobel, ING Bank and the NS are implementing the “5 Moments of Need” methodology as the approach to increase the efficiency of their learning programs and to achieve better performance in their workforce.
