What can you expect as a student?

Welcome to the HAN School of Engineering and Automotive (AEA)! Probably studying at a hbo is new to you and you feel a bit uncertain. That’s why we would like to help you on your way.

Student guidance

During your first weeks as a first-year, you will meet your student supervisor (at Automotive) or learning team coach (Engineering programmes). This is the person who, together with your student group, coaches and guides you in your studies.

He or she is also your first point of contact in special situations; for example, if your studies do not go as planned or in case of long-term illness or disability. He or she can then help you find ways to improve your study progress. Make sure to keep this person informed yourself.

Of course, you will also meet your lecturers, researchers, instructors and practical support staff. All working for you to make your studies go as smoothly as possible.

Lessons, assignments and homework

You have more freedom in higher education than you were used to in secondary school. Often it is your own responsibility to decide whether you come to class and do your homework. This doesn’t mean active participation and commitment from students isn’t important to us! Lecturers may ask you to leave the class if you don’t participate actively or if you disturb others.

Illness

You are not obliged to report to your learning team coach or personal tutor if you cannot attend a lesson due to illness. However, it is good manners to let the lecturer know by sending an email. This certainly applies to your fellow students in a project.

For subjects with an attendance requirement, it is important to inform your lecturer if you must be absent. You should also inform your learning team coach if you become ill for a prolonged period. You may need to work together to make a plan for catching up on missed material.

Different nationalities

You will meet students and lecturers of different nationalities and cultures; from your own study, but also from other study programmes. You are bound to gain an enrichment of your life experience. A broad horizon of possibilities of what you can now do with your studies and as a future college engineer will become more and more visible as you progress through your studies.

Practical skills

You will learn practical skills and gain a dose of new knowledge and insights. You will also get to know yourself better and we will try to increase your opportunities, possibilities and critical view of our (technological) society. Together, we will work on this. Because together we learn and work on the high-tech and technological processes for tomorrow.

Our buildings and locations

We are particularly proud of our two modern equipped educational buildings at Ruitenberglaan 26 (ground floor B wing) and Ruitenberglaan 29 on the HAN Campus in Arnhem, with high-tech machines and applications.

We also welcome you soon in our brand-new Connectr building at Industriepark Kleefse Waard. As an university school, we very consciously do applied research there with SME parties, where you can help companies with valuable knowledge and innovations you have developed during your studies; and the company provides particularly interesting cases for our education.

Your up-to-date and special prior knowledge gives you an immediate advantage. You can do a work placement or graduation assignment at these companies, which in many cases can also be your future job.

Higher education institution

You can see that we are already developing from a school into a higher education knowledge institution. The HAN core values of Clean, Smart and Social are central to this. We sincerely hope that as a 1st-year student in this dynamic you will soon feel at home with our AEA-school and especially your own studies.

We wish you much success and enjoy your studies!

On behalf of the management team and all AEA staff,

drs.ing. G.H. (Gerrit) Averesch
Dean HAN Academy of Engineering and Automotive
