Mick’s project cars

Mick with catHey everyone, I am back again with a new post. Since semester 4 has started I have only got 3 days of school per week. This results in me having more time to work on my project cars. So you can already guess what this post is going to be about!

I have 2 project cars as you might have read in my first post. These are a Mazda MX-5 and a Volkswagen Beetle. I already hear you think; another car fanatic with a Miata and yes I totally agree with you. The MX-5 is very common in the car community, but this has a reason. The MX-5 was relatively affordable and it is reliable. Some people will say they are ‘fast’, but they are not. They are really fun in the corners the other hand.

The Beetle, I have to confess, was more of an impulse buy. I was looking at an offer for a Citroën Mehari and saw this Beetle. When bidding on the Mehari the price got way to high, so I started bidding on the Beetle and got it. I was rather stumped since I only looked at the outside of the car at the auction and not at the mechanical state. But I have had the car for 2 years now and it’s still working perfectly without any big problems. For the ones interested, the Beetle is for sale 🙂

The Beetle is completely finished, in my eyes it is as perfect as I am going to get it, but the Miata is still work in progress. I bought it with faded paint, rusty door stills and a lot of dents. The interior on the other hand was really nice, just like the engine. Still some work had to be done regarding the engine though. The day after I bought it, I changed the timing belt. This was really easy since there is a lot of space in the engine bay. Then I had to change the shocks as it did not pass the MOT. Of course I lowered the car, which made it a bit less practical to drive, the speedbumps at the HAN are especially bad to drive over.

Eventually, I finally saved enough money to get the car welded and repainted. I did not go for the stock color which was British racing green. Instead I painted it a dark green, with blue metallic flakes in it. It turned out great in my opinion. Then I changed the soft-top and exhaust. Now the time has come to buy new rims for the car, I am still saving money for the type I want, but when those are bought I will finally be done with the cosmetic upgrades on the car and I will be focusing on making more power!
