Energy transition through hydrogen
Energy transition is inevitable. After all, the percentage of sustainable energy sources is increasing and electricity has more and more uses. To make this transition possible and to avoid grid complications, HAN research has been carried out on a hydrogen installation.
Explain!
The installation, also called P2P/P2X (read Power to Power, Power to Gas), uses sustainable energy sources to produce hydrogen. This happens when the supply of the sustainable electricity sources exceeds the demand. The produced hydrogen can be stored and act as a buffer or store, when the electricity demand is higher the hydrogen can be converted into electricity. In addition, the hydrogen can also be sold to third parties.

What is the P2P/P2X feasibility study?
Recently, the P2P/P2X feasibility study was concluded, to which HAN has made an important contribution. The feasibility study was carried out in cooperation with Alliander, MTSA, Dekra and Kiemt on behalf of the province of Gelderland. The study showed that the system is competitive with other storage/buffer systems. The study is the first phase of the entire project, which must ultimately result in a demo.

What is it like to work as a student on this research?
The research was carried out by 2 researchers, a teacher-researcher and 2 students. Also called the triangle “education-research-professional field”. As a student, it is an instructive experience, the application of hydrogen suddenly comes very close. In addition, you carry out research that can actually be used by the companies and institutions involved.
Bas ter Horst, work student Automotive Engineering, found the cooperation between student and researcher efficient and enjoyable.
Bas: “Naturally, as a student you also want to prove yourself. Reason enough to do your utmost. I received a lot of trust, people listen and the cooperation is good. The feeling that you are part of a team and have equal value is also very motivating. The experience gained is also exceptional. Different companies are involved in the project. This gives the project different perspectives or aspects that you just don’t think about as a student. I am very grateful that I was able to get involved in this project and hope to have made a real contribution. On to a sustainable future!”
What are the prospects with hydrogen applications?
From a social point of view, the prospects for hydrogen storage systems are quite positive. Technological developments in the field of hydrogen will make the system more efficient and cheaper in the future. The costs of producing hydrogen are still relatively high, but will decrease in the future. This will make hydrogen increasingly suitable as a storage medium for sustainable energy sources.
The whole report will be available soon!
