Confusing Eusebius church with hydrogen-powered demo heater?
Jasper, Henrico and Matthias are 2nd-year Mechanical Engineering students collaborating on a demonstration model of a hydrogen heater in the iconic Eusebius church in Arnhem.
The students are thus contributing to the project of energy transition company HyMatters, which wants to achieve heating via heaters running on hydrogen instead of natural gas. It is a sub-project to fulfil the Eusebius’ ambition of being the ‘most sustainable church in the world’.
Edwin Tazelaar is one of the founders of HyMatters. He supervises the students building the demonstration model. The students have to take many different things into account. There has to be some kind of frame for the heater. The lighter the weight, the better. From the company, they are handed help with calculations, for example, but this is never a straitjacket.
Henrico: “Coming up with something new or better is only welcomed. Because I now put what I learn into practice, I enjoy my studies a lot more. I better understand why I learn things. Moreover, I think it’s a great idea that we are doing this project for the Eusebius. Such a large, iconic and historic building that still wants to become very sustainable.
