S6 project MORE (Modular Research Vehicle)

How do we train our HAN mobility engineers of tomorrow? We are doing so, for example, with MORE, a HAN Modular Research vehicle, which is entirely designed and built by students. This gives them hands-on opportunities to work with the latest developments in Automotive.

Why is MORE never finished?

Students, researchers and companies work together to incorporate new technologies for construction, powertrain, vehicle dynamics and smart mobility. What are these? That is determined by the latest research we are conducting together with companies and the automotive trends that are of interest to HAN students. MORE offers enormous possibilities: by designing, building, testing and researching with MORE, students gain real, in-depth, hands-on experience with these new technologies. Therefore, MORE is never finished. Every semester, new possibilities arise and new functionality is added.

The vehicle is modular, what does this mean?

It consists of a front, middle and back section which are bolted together. Because of this modularity, it can be modified relatively easily over the years.

What is the history?

In February 2021, a group of Automotive, semester 6 students started designing and building the spaceframe for the middle section and building the front and rear section using parts from existing cars, including an electric powertrain. This gave us a basic vehicle to start with.

From September 2021 – January 2022, we had MORE projects with over 50 (Engineering and Automotive, bachelor and master) students! This included our first commercial research project with a company implementing 4WS and vision. We also have companies sponsoring and working with us:

What is the future outlook?

Over the years, the front and rear sections will be adapted for different research projects, for example to add single wheel steering, steer by wire, brake by wire, etc. The driveline can also be adapted using HAN control systems. The driveline can also be adapted using HAN control systems. Advanced controls can be added for automatic driving.

Why is business management so important?

The success of MORE strongly depends on the proper execution of the business management: how to satisfy our stakeholders (students, researchers, companies)? How to involve companies? How to manage all this? How to get a lot of media attention? How to get … MORE?

In this way, (bachelor and master) students will work together to further develop this vehicle into a fully fledged high-performance testing platform that can be used in education and advanced research.
